My JEE Main to CSAB Counselling Journey

Hello Jee Asprirant !

Every JEE aspirant knows that there are two major stages of counselling: JoSAA and CSAB.

JoSAA generally conducts 5–6 rounds of counselling, while CSAB usually conducts two rounds. After these rounds, some institutes also conduct spot rounds. However, the spot round process is not always easy for students. I would like to share my own experience of the counselling process and the difficulties I faced.

My JEE Main CRL rank was 4,238, my category rank was 822, and my percentile was 99.54.

Through JoSAA counselling, I got CSE at NIT Rourkela.

After that, CSAB counselling started. During CSAB choice filling, I selected only three colleges in the following order:
  1. NIT Tiruchirappalli
  2. NIT Surathkal
  3. NIT Warangal
While filling in my choices, I simply searched for "Tiruchirappalli" and selected the options that appeared. After that, I selected Surathkal and then Warangal.

Unfortunately, I made a mistake while filling in my choices, which I realised only on the result day.

At that time, I was in Allahabad for my SSB interview. I had successfully cleared the initial screening test and group discussion. I was also selected for the next stage, which involved five days of physical training at the SSB centre.

When I checked my CSAB result, I was completely shocked and disappointed. I immediately panicked, took a train and travelled to the CSAB headquarters at NIT Rourkela to ask whether any changes could be made.

However, the staff members told me that I would have to approach the court and file a case regarding the incident.

One of the staff members even shared his contact number and told me about a similar incident involving a girl from the previous year. She had also made a mistake during counselling and had filed a legal case. Eventually, she got a seat at NIT Tiruchirappalli, but only after waiting for an entire year. But not Guaranteed.

I felt that this was a very long legal process. Even if I got a seat the following year, I would already have lost another academic year. Therefore, I decided to join IIIT Tiruchirappalli instead.
My Advice to All JEE Aspirants

I strongly recommend that every JEE aspirant carefully check their choices before locking them during counselling, especially in the CSAB rounds.

Please double-check your college preferences, branch selections and choice order before final submission. Once you lock your choices, making corrections can be extremely difficult, and the process may be irreversible.

I understand how painful such situations can be. Students work extremely hard for years to secure admission to a good engineering college. A small mistake during counselling should not have the power to affect their entire academic journey.
My Appeal to the Government and CSAB Authorities

The government should consider this student-like ministry quota to offer the seats.

I would like to request the government and CSAB authorities to consider making the counselling process more student-friendly.

If a student has already secured a seat through JoSAA but accidentally makes an incorrect choice during CSAB counselling, there should be an option to retain their previous JoSAA seat before the CSAB result is announced.

Alternatively, students could be given a fresh choice-filling opportunity before the second CSAB round.

I would also like to highlight another issue with spot-round counselling. In some counselling processes, such as certain Delhi-based counselling systems, fresh registration is not allowed during the spot round. I believe students should be given an opportunity to register fresh and participate in spot rounds, wherever vacant seats are available.

These mistakes and counselling-related issues affect many students. The authorities should take this matter seriously and introduce a system that protects students from losing valuable academic opportunities because of genuine counselling mistakes.

I hope my experience helps other JEE aspirants avoid making the same mistake.
